3 types of balcony waterproofing products for waterproofing

July 7, 2022 2 Min Read

As with any work, balcony waterproofing requires a well-prepared, strong, and stable layer. This substrate can vary from system to system, but a good rule of thumb is to provide a finish that you will be willing to tile without any waterproofing. Balcony waterproofing can be achieved using almost any product range that is commonly applied. Different systems have different advantages and some special considerations when evaluating which solution is most suitable for your project. Although these are classified as trafficable membrane systems, they do not take well for traffic on hot to hot days. Softened bitumen is easy to damage and can be transferred to your shoes and trampled through your room.

Sikalastic Rapid

Sikalastic Rapid is the best balcony waterproofing product designed to be used in situations where the contractor’s access to the area may be limited and a quick application is recommended. A common view could be a communal walkway or staircase within a housing block, often seen in urban areas, where residents need access to their homes within an acceptable time.

It is based on PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) technology, which provides the fastest healing of any liquid applied membrane on the market, even at low temperatures. The product can heal in 30-40 minutes and can be accelerated if needed. The systems are compatible with almost all levels, wear exceptionally tight, and are proven to withstand the demands of the walkway, porch, and roof environment. Reliable waterproofing and protection combined with effective surfacing.

Butyl Rubber Waterproofing

Butyl rubber is an ideal membrane for verandah waterproofing because it can be applied to the bottom of a screed or directly below the end of most surfaces. Butyl rubber waterproofing can be applied to most substrates by the minimum specifications, including concrete, plywood, and cement sheets. In some cases, an epoxy primer is required before placing the butyl rubber waterproofing membrane.

Another thing you should keep in mind when using a butyl rubber is that it needs to be applied before installing door and window frames and attached to the building framework (or masonry) before installing it. The ultimate consideration for waterproofing a butyl rubber balcony is the application of the finish material, whether it be tiles or other finishes. Butyl rubbers are not easy materials for bonding by their nature and as a result, most tile adhesives have serious problems forming an acceptable bond.

Seamless Liquid Waterproofing

Balcony waterproofing using a liquid system is slightly less forgiving than using a butyl rubber system but can be performed later in the construction phase to reduce the chance of damage. The substrate should be prepared and ready to accept the finishing product and in some cases, the epoxy primer may have to be applied in place of the standard primer. Unlike butyl rubber, veranda waterproofing using liquids should have door frames and wall cladding. Liquid waterproofing systems can also adopt a wide range of adhesives for final finishing.

The most suitable terrace waterproofing system pays special attention to the important leak points of the porch or porch.
